How Much Does Tree Removal Cost?

Learn what affects tree removal prices, from tree size and access to cleanup, so you can plan your budget and compare quotes with confidence.

Why Tree Removal Prices Vary

The cost to cut down a tree depends on the work requested and what a provider finds at your property. Height, trunk size, access, hazards, equipment, cleanup, hauling, timing, and local rules can all change the price. Published consumer guides give broad ranges, but they don’t fully explain the jobs behind them. There is no single price for every tree, so ask each provider what their quote includes and leaves out.

Tree Height and Size

Taller or larger trees may need a different plan, crew, or equipment. Consumer guides group heights in different ways, so treat any height range as a rough guide, not a fixed rule. Our calculator uses broad height ranges to show an estimated cost.

Trunk Diameter

A contractor may ask for your trunk diameter to understand the tree’s size. Measurements can differ from person to person, so an online figure is only approximate. The calculator uses diameter as one of several details, not as a price formula.

Tree Type

Species and general tree type can affect how a provider plans the job. Published comparisons don’t show a reliable price difference from type alone, apart from size, site, and services. In our calculator, tree type adds context but doesn’t change the range.

Access to the Tree

Narrow gates, steep or uneven ground, limited vehicle access, or a tree in a tight yard can change how crews and equipment reach the work area. A provider decides what equipment and plan fit after seeing the property. The calculator records access as context only.

Nearby Structures, Power Lines, and Hazards

Buildings, fences, overhead utility lines, damaged limbs, or a leaning tree may need careful planning. Never approach a hazardous tree or utility line to measure it. The calculator notes these conditions for context but can’t judge them. A professional assessment is needed.

Tree Condition and Emergency Work

A dead, damaged, storm-hit, or unstable tree may need a different assessment and work plan. Urgent timing can affect scheduling and availability. The sources we reviewed don’t support a reliable emergency price adjustment, so the calculator doesn’t add one.

Cleanup, Stump Grinding, and Hauling

Check whether a quote covers cutting down the tree only, or also stump work, branch cleanup, chipping, hauling, and disposal. Providers may bundle these services or price them separately. Compare the written scope of each quote, because not every quote includes the same work.

Location and Local Requirements

Local labor rates, access, rules, and provider availability can all affect price. Our calculator doesn’t use your ZIP code, so don’t treat its range as a local quote. Check any local requirements with the relevant authority or provider.

Calculator Estimate vs. Contractor Quote

The calculator shows an estimated planning range based on published national consumer guides. It isn’t a contractor quote. A contractor can inspect your tree and property, confirm the services you need, and give you a quote for that job.
